Lewis & Cooper Makes the Final Four in The Grocer 2008 Gold Awards

Lewis & Cooper fought off tough competition to make it to the final four in the Independent Retailer of the Year category at the prestigious Grocer Magazine Gold Awards 2008.

About the Award Category

Life is tough for independent grocery retailers. Operating in a difficult market against fierce competition from the multiples, facing soaring energy and food costs, the burden of employment legislation and an economic downturn as customers tighten their belts, it is crucial for independent retailers to provide a point of difference to entice customers back again and again.

This year The Grocer Gold Awards Independent Retailer of the Year category has been extended to encompass independent operators both big and small.
The Judges were looking for professional, innovative and ambitious retailers with good consumer insight, passion and commitment. Good category management, innovation in the product offer, strong branding, community involvement, customer loyalty and an impressive financial performance were also musts.

What The Grocer Said About Us...

The main aim of this gourmet store, located in the bustling market town of Northallerton, North Yorkshire, is to preserve its 109-year history as a traditional grocer while to continuing to invest and innovate.
In 2007, it opened a 10,000 sq ft production and processing operation to allow it to increase footfall, improve margins, increase product lines, build online sales and offer its range to other retail, hotel and restaurant outlets.
It also launched a successful global events programme to create a ‘touch of in-store theatre’ and make customers aware of products from local and International sources

The Winner

At a glittering awards ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London, Lewis & Cooper were sadly beaten to the number one spot, with Mills Group claiming this years title of Independent Retailer of the Year.
