At Lewis & Cooper we don’t need much of an excuse to cut a cake and crack open a bottle of fizz, especially since we stock such good ranges of both.

But we’re particularly keen to celebrate the landmark of our 110th year of trading.

It was 11 decades ago, back in 1899, that George Henry Lewis and Binks Barton Cooper went into business together. Out of the jaws of disaster – their employer, Robert Brogden, was set to close his grocery store in Northallerton High Street – the pair’s management buy-out was the foundation of a fantastic victory. Mssrs Lewis and Cooper created what quickly became the biggest business of its kind in the area.

It is remarkable the extent to which our motto – declared from day one – still stands today:
“To extend our reputation throughout Yorkshire and the North East as successful purveyors of fine foods, wines, glass and china and makers of the highest quality gift packs and hampers.”

Except, of course, that our reputation now extends far further than mere borders on a map, thanks to the World Wide Web, marvellous mail-order service and a string of national awards.
A second store, up the road in Yarm-on-Tees, has followed plus, in our home town, production kitchens which lovingly turn out thousands of scrumptious fruit cakes and plum puddings each year.

Later this month, we’re planning a host of in-store competitions, offers and meet-the-producer tastings – the birthday celebrations are coinciding with this year’s British Food Fortnight scrummy-fest. There will also be special menu items in the Northallerton tea room, which is also celebrating a birthday: it was opened ten years ago as part of the store’s centenary.

No Birthday is complete without a cake. To celebrate our big day, Wendy and her team cooked up a giant fruit cake in our kitchens based on the same delicious recipe from which our award-winning cakes are made, only in this whopper there are at least 100 eggs and 2 bottles of Port amongst other top quality delicious ingredients!

We offered our valued online customers the opportunity to join our local customers in guessing the weight of our Birthday Cake (pictured above) for a chance to win a delicious prize.

We're please to announce the winner of the guess the weight competition was Ms Ungerecuts from Romanby, North Yorkshire who guessed the nearest weight of 13.5Kg.  The cake actually weighed in at 13.490kg or 29.740lbs.  Well done to our winner, and thank you to everyone who took part.
