New Store Opening - Lewis & Cooper Yarm

ITV Tyne Tees presenter, local resident and Lewis & Cooper customer Pam Royle performed the honours to officially open our new Yarm store...

We're thrilled that Pam Royle, one of the North-East's best-loved television personalities, helped open our new fine food store in Yarm in May, 2009.

Family, guests, VIPs and customers celebrated our move from our former concession within family-owned department store Strickland & Holt, to our very own refitted store in the High Street.

Opening the store, Ms Royle spoke of her fond childhood memories of Lewis & Cooper’s store in Northallerton.

“I think it’s so refreshing that Lewis & Cooper have made such a commitment to Yarm with what is a beautiful shop. From being a very small child, I remember our family visits to Lewis & Cooper in Northallerton. I always thought it was like an Aladdin’s cave of goodies, and the rich smell of ground coffee beans was the first thing that used to hit me as we entered the shop. We used to love those tiny crystal violet sweets – they were just like little doll’s sweets and were such a treat!”

Ms Royle, added that she had enjoyed taking her own children to the store to introduce them to old-fashioned sweets and more.

“When Lewis & Cooper opened their shop in Strickland & Holt I was absolutely thrilled! It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to buy from such a tasty range of produce almost on my doorstep in Yarm.”

Ms Royle, who co-presents North-East Tonight, has a keen interest in good food and has hosted the respected Flavours of Hambleton food and drink awards for several years, of which Lewis & Cooper are have been proud winners in the past. Ms Royle added...

“It’s been a great pleasure to see Lewis & Cooper receive so many well-deserved awards. It’s also highly apparent how well- respected they are, not only by their customers, but also by so many other food producers and traders in the food industry.”

Our Finance Director David Lewis, toasting the new store, said he was proud of manager Sue Emmerson and the rest of the staff for their hard work preparing for the new era in Yarm. Dr David Gearey, Chairman, said: “Doing business in Yarm has been a pleasure over the years, but we were delighted to be able to take up the chance of rare vacant premises on the high street. Our customers will be able to find at the new address the exclusive fine foods and wines for which we are famous.”

Striving to offer what the supermarkets cannot, Lewis & Cooper Yarm will continue our successful formula, with an extensive range of delicatessen items and dried goods, as well as wonderful traditional sweets which our Yarm customers are regularly praising for bringing back fond memories. All these are alongside the range of international foods and wines familiar to our Northallerton customers, and the lines – many of them exclusive to us – that are sourced locally or made in our own kitchens: cheeses from the Dales, York hams, cooked meats and coffees freshly-roasted at the Northallerton store.

Shop Manager Sue Emmerson said there had been a keen interest in the new store from shoppers, with well-wishers even bringing in a celebration cake on one of the long, hard days spent getting it ready to open.
“Our customers in Yarm have been kind and loyal right from the first day we arrived in Yarm eight years ago and we look forward to welcoming them at our new store.”
